matcha bunsLately, I've become a bit obsessed with green tea. My boyfriend ordered some matcha for me from Japan (why is it 50 cents cheaper now... >_>) about a month ago and I've been experimenting here and there in the weeks between. I came across a recipe for green tea mushi pan and tried it once with powdered masala chai and then with the matcha. It's fantastic, needless to say; this morning I was making a batch of strawberry cream popsicles (I'll post the recipe later once I have pictures. They aren't frozen completely yet.) and was going to do a second batch in green tea. I had a mixture of cream cheese and matcha and some other stuff in my bowl and I thought dang, this looks like a nice cream cheese icing. I must have cake!

Enter Green Tea Steamed Layer Cake~  steamed layer cake

I used two of the four steamed buns to make the three layers, but in retrospect, I should probably have used three of the buns. I cut off the rounded tops so I had three flat, circular cakes, layered them with the matcha icing, and iced everything with a sprinkling of matcha powder at the end. Nothing complicated~ Chill for a bit before serving if you want. (Note: these are little cakes! about cup-cake circumference)

The icing accented the more mild flavor of the cakes. I used a good amount of matcha in the icing, so it definitely had a strong green tea flavor. Use less if you prefer more sweetness to come through, or alternately, just increase the amount of sugar a bit.

I have a bad habit of throwing things together and not writing down the measurements, so... be warned ;)

  • 4 oz cream cheese

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 c sugar

  • 2 tsp matcha (That sounds like a lot actually... more matcha = deeper green, stronger tea flavor. But I like the strong tea flavor.)

This is pretty close to what I used. It's definitely enough icing for one layered cake, but if you're going to do two layer cakes, I would increase the amount of cream cheese bit. It covered the second, but I was scraping down the bowl a lot toward the end.steamed layer cake

Download here. It isn't a huge file and it's the most relaxing, lovely, simple word processor. I don't think I'll be able to go back to typing in Microsoft Word after using ZenWriter. There's relaxing music, pretty backgrounds, and it's so peaceful~

I don't know why I didn't read We Are All Diamonds by loaded_march sooner. I'm literally melting into a pool of love and tears and emotion reading this fic. It is the most incredible, moving, rich, beautiful story I think I've ever read. When I'm gushing like this I can't really come up with coherent compliments, but this fic... This fic - I can't properly articulate how much I want to hold onto this fic forever. When it's over I don't know what I'm going to do. (I just finished the third part. I don't want it to end!) I'm listening to opera music now o.O

It was early afternoon. Morgana stepped through the forest. Her gown became entangled on a branch, but she ripped it free and pressed on. Needless to say, she was beyond angry and extremely frustrated. The woods were thick with mist when she stepped into a little clearing, waiting for Morgause.

“Sister,” Morgause greeted her solemnly, stepping out from behind a tree. Morgana turned at her sister’s voice, but didn’t smile. “What troubles you?”
